COTTON AND TOBACCO YIELDS EXPECTED TO BE ABOVE 2003


Columbia, S.C., September 10, 2004:     Based on September 1 conditions, yields for cotton and tobacco are expected to be above 2003. Yields for corn and soybeans are above the August forecast, however, cotton and peanuts are unchanged from August, the USDA NASS South Carolina Statistical Office announced today.


CORN production in 2004 is expected to total 25.2 million bushels, up 1 percent (265 thousand bushels) from last month, and up 12 percent (2.6 million bushels) from last year. Expected yield per acre of 95 bushels is up 1 bushel from the August forecast but down 10 bushels from 2003. Acreage for harvest as grain, at 265,000, is up 50,000 acres from 2003.


FLUE-CURED TOBACCO production, as of September 1, is forecast at 59.4 million pounds. This is down 4 percent from last month's forecast and down 6 percent from last year's production of 63.0 million pounds. Yield per acre of 2,200 pounds is down 100 pounds from last month, and is 100 pounds above last year. Acreage for harvest, at 27,000, is unchanged from last month but down 3,000 acres from a year ago.


SOYBEAN production this year is forecast at 11.7 million bushels, up 4 percent from last month but down 1 percent from last year. Expected yield per acre of 26 bushels is up 1 bushel from the August estimate, but down 2 bushels from a year ago. Acres for harvest, at 450,000, is up 30,000 acres from a year ago.


COTTON production in 2004 is forecast at 332,000 bales - unchanged from last month, but up 6,000 bales from last year. Yield per acre is expected to average 731 pounds, unchanged from the August forecast but 13 pounds above the 2003 yield. Acreage for harvest, at 218,000 acres, is unchanged from 2003.


PEANUT production is forecast at 102.3 million pounds - up 15.5 million pounds from last month and up 77 percent from a year ago. Yield per acre, at 3,100 pounds is unchanged from August but 300 pounds below the 2003 yield. Acreage for harvest, at 33,000, is up 16,000 acres from last year.
