South Dakota Barley Varieties
Released: July 14, 2000

Introduction
This report summarizes data from 292 South Dakota barley producers by the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. We would like to thank all who supplied data making this report possible. Percents and acreage data are included at both the state and agricultural district levels.

Highlights
Robust remained the most popular barley variety seeded during 2000 in South Dakota. Robust was planted on 58.7 percent of the total acreage, up from 45.2 percent in 1999. This is the 8th consecutive year that the malting variety, Robust, has been the leading variety. The next three highest varieties are all feed varieties; Logan at 9.8, Stark at 9.7, and Bowman at 7.9 percent. These top four varieties account for 86.1 percent of the barley planted. This year's planted acreage is estimated at 115,000, up 35,000 acres from last year.

Malting Varieties
Robust, the leading malting barley planted, increased 13.5 percent age points over 1999 to 58.7 percent of total barley (67,600 acres). The three other leading malting varieties were down slightly from last year, planted on 5.9 percent of the acreage and accounting for 6,700 acres. Malting varieties represented 64.6 percent (74,300 acres) of the state's total acreage. Malting varieties are those recommended by the American Malting Barley Association for malting and brewing in 2000.

Feed Varieties

Logan and Stark were the leading feed varieties planted, followed closely by Bowman. These three varieties accounted for 27.4 percent, or 31,500 acres. The three remaining feed varieties accounted for 5,100 acres, or 4.4 percent.
