1995 SOUTH DAKOTA SOYBEAN VARIETIES

USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service conducted a soybean variety survey at the request of South Dakota State University's Plant Science Department. The survey was funded by the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council. This is the first time a soybean variety survey of this type has been done in South Dakota. The survey was conducted in August and collected information about acreage planted in 1995.

A random sample of all known soybean growers was selected for the survey. Positive reports were tabulated from 7% of the soybean growers in the State. Reported acreage accounted for nearly 8% of the State's 2,450,000 soybean acres.

The objectives of this survey of South Dakota planted soybean acreage were:

    1. To obtain acreage planted to each variety classified as publicly developed varieties and privately developed varieties.

    2. To obtain acreage planted by maturity group. In South Dakota, maturity groups range from 00 to 3, with maturity group 00 requiring the shortest growing season and maturity group 3 requiring the longest.

The survey results show that 86.9% of the State's soybeans were planted to privately developed varieties. Publicly developed varieties accounted for 11.6% and the other 1.5% were planted to unknown or mixed varieties.

The survey also shows that 49.8% of the State's soybeans are classified as maturity group 2. Maturity group 0 accounts for 22.5% of the State's acreage and maturity group 1 accounts for 26.8%. Maturity groups 00 and 3 combined account for 0.9%.

Private seed developers provided 86.9% of the soybean seed, with Pioneer and DeKalb Companies being the leading suppliers with 18.2% and 12.8%, respectively, of the total. The next most popular private developers were Northrup King, Agri-Pro, Asgrow, and Golden Harvest.

Public soybean varieties are developed by state and/or federal institutions. The most popular variety was Dawson which accounted for 2.9% of the total acreage. Parker was next with 1.9% of the acreage followed by Corsoy and Lambert with 1.2% and 1.1% of the total acreage.
