A random sample of all known soybean growers
was selected for the survey. Positive reports were
tabulated from 7% of the soybean growers in the
State. Reported acreage accounted for nearly 8%
of the State's 2,450,000 soybean acres.
The objectives of this survey of South Dakota
planted soybean acreage were:
1. To obtain acreage planted to each
variety classified as publicly developed varieties
and privately developed varieties.
2. To obtain acreage planted by maturity
group. In South Dakota, maturity groups range
from 00 to 3, with maturity group 00 requiring the
shortest growing season and maturity group 3
requiring the longest.
The survey results show that 86.9% of the State's
soybeans were planted to privately developed
varieties. Publicly developed varieties accounted for
11.6% and the other 1.5% were planted to
unknown or mixed varieties.
The survey also shows that 49.8% of the State's
soybeans are classified as maturity group 2.
Maturity group 0 accounts for 22.5% of the
State's acreage and maturity group 1 accounts for
26.8%. Maturity groups 00 and 3 combined
account for 0.9%.
Public soybean varieties are developed by state
and/or federal institutions. The most popular variety
was Dawson which accounted for 2.9% of the
total acreage. Parker was next with 1.9% of the
acreage followed by Corsoy and Lambert with
1.2% and 1.1% of the total acreage.
