INTRODUCTION
This report summarizes the results of a June survey of over 4,400 South Dakota wheat producers. Approximately 1,900 farm operators reported winter wheat and 2,500 reported spring wheat. Percents and acreage data are included at both the State and agricultural district levels for winter and spring wheat. We would like to thank all producers supplying data and making this report possible. This survey is conducted on an intermittent basis. Comparable surveys were last completed in 1984 and 1991.

HIGHLIGHTS
The most popular wheat variety in South Dakota in 1996 is Arapahoe, a winter wheat variety; while the most planted

spring wheat variety is Butte 86. Both varieties are dominant in their respective class of wheat and together, they account for 40 percent of the State's 4,275,000 wheat acres accord ing to the survey.
