2004 CROP VALUES DOWN
SIOUX FALLS, February 16, 2005 _ The value of all principal crops grown in South Dakota in
2004 totaled 2.551 billion dollars, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Office.
This is down 6 percent from the 2.722 billion dollar value of 2003 crops and 30 percent above the
1.96 billion dollar value of 2002 crops. In general, even with record production or yields for many
crops, lower crop prices in 2004 resulted in overall lower values.
Corn for grain was the leading valued crop of 2004, at 890.2 million dollars, down 9 percent from
2003. Soybeans were ranked as the second highest valued crop, at 693.4 million; followed by
alfalfa hay, third, at 311.9 million; other spring wheat, fourth, at 240.9 million; and winter wheat,
fifth, at 174.4 million. Remaining crops and their 2004 values are: other hay, 109.4 million;
sunflower, 74.6 million; oats, 18.8 million; proso millet, 10.9 million; sorghum for grain, 10.4 million;
barley, 6.3 million; dry edible beans, 3.6 million;
rye, 1.8 million;
durum wheat, 1.7 million; and
flaxseed, 0.9 million.
The 2004 value of production decreased from 2003 values for corn, soybeans, alfalfa hay, winter
wheat, oats, sorghum for grain, barley, and
durum wheat
; while values increased for spring wheat,
other hay, sunflower, proso millet, dry edible beans, rye, and flax. Crop values are computed by
multiplying the marketing year average price by the production.
