SD-CROP-LIVESTOCK NEWS RELEASE United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service South Dakota Field Office - Sioux Falls, SD Media contact: South Dakota Office, 605/323-6500 Email: nass-sd@nass.usda.gov MAY PRICES RECEIVED MIXED SIOUX FALLS, May 31, 2006 -- Preliminary May prices were up from April for corn, soybeans, winter wheat, spring wheat, and alfalfa hay, according to the South Dakota Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Preliminary prices for barrows and gilts were up, while steers and heifers, and cows, were down. The preliminary winter wheat price for May, at $4.20, was up 37 cents from last month and up $1.04 from last May. The spring wheat price, at $4.31, was 20 cents higher than last month and 94 cents higher than last year. The May soybean price, at $5.34, was 8 cents higher than last month but 77 cents lower than last year. The corn price, at $1.95, was up 6 cents from last month and up 11 cents from last year. The preliminary all sunflower price, at $10.20, was down 80 cents from last month and down $5.70 from last year. The preliminary May barrow and gilt price, at $49.50, was up $7.00 from last month but down $7.60 from last year, while sows, at $28.10, were up 40 cents from April but down $13.70 from May 2005. The preliminary May steers and heifers price, at $90.00, was down $4.40 from April and down $11.00 from May of last year. Calves, at $127.00, were unchanged from last month but down $8.00 from May 2005. The May alfalfa price, at $69.00 per ton, was up $4.00 from last month and up $8.00 from last year. The other hay price, at $55.00, was up $6.00 from last month and up $6.00 from May 2005.
