SIOUX FALLS, January 12, 2005 -- December 1, 2004 corn, all wheat, oats, barley, and soybean
stocks are up from last year, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service.
Sorghum and hay stocks have declined from last year. Total stocks included grain on farms, grain
in mills and elevators, grain in government storage bins, and grain stored under the farmer-owned
Grain Reserve Program in South Dakota on December 1, 2004.
Soybean stocks totaled 94.6 million bushels, up 43 percent from last year. On-farm stocks totaled
65.0 million bushels, up 86 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 29.6 million bushels, are
down 6 percent from last year.
Corn stocks totaled 437.1 million bushels, up 27 percent from last year's total of 343.6 million
bushels and a new record high. On-farm stocks accounted for 320.0 million bushels, up 21
percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 117.1 million bushels, are up 49 percent from 2003.
All Wheat stocks totaled 78.3 million bushels, up 17 percent from last year. On-farm stocks
increased 24 percent from last year, to 52.0 million bushels. Off-farm stocks, at 26.3 million
bushels, are up 6 percent from last year's 24.8 million bushels.
Oat stocks, at 11.4 million bushels, are up 19 percent from last year. On-farm stocks totaled 9.7
million bushels, up 21 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks totaled 1.7 million bushels, up 9
percent from 2003.
Barley stocks on farms totaled for 1.8 million bushels, up 80 percent from last year.
Sorghum off-farm stocks, at 1.186 million bushels, are down 4 percent from last year's 1.231
million bushels.
Hay stocks, at 6.9 million tons, are down 4 percent from last year's total of 7.2 million tons.
Grain Storage Capacity in South Dakota totaled 762 million bushels on December 1, 2004, up 4
percent from last year. Total grain storage capacity comprises 580 million bushels on-farm and
182 million bushels off-farm. Off-farm storage capacity increased 14 percent from last year, while
on-farm storage capacity increased slightly less than 1 percent. There were 255 mill and elevators
with storage capacity on December 1, 2004, 3 more facilities than in 2003.
