sd-crop-livestock ANNUAL SMALL GRAIN SUMMARY News Release September 30, 2005 SOUTH DAKOTA SMALL GRAIN PRODUCTION SIOUX FALLS, September 30, 2005 -- South Dakota's 2005 all wheat production is up 2 percent from 2004 due to an increase in harvested acres, despite decreases in planted acres and yield. Small grain yields, with the exception of winter wheat, were down from last year's high yields. This is according to year end estimates compiled and released by the South Dakota Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. All wheat production, at 131.22 million bushels, is up 2 percent from last year. The all wheat yield is 41.7 bushels, down 4.3 bushels from last year's record high. Harvested acres, at 3.14 million, are up 12 percent from 2004. Planted acres, at 3.265 million, are down slightly from last year's 3.27 million acres. Winter wheat production this year, at 63.36 million bushels, is up 13 percent from last year's production. Yield, at 44 bushels per acre, is 1 bushel below last year. Harvested acres, at 1.44 million, are 15 percent above the 2004 level. Planted acres, at 1.50 million, are down 9 percent from a year ago. Durum wheat production, at 260,000 bushels, is 42 percent below last year's production. Yield, at 20 bushels per acre, is down 5 bushels from last year. Planted acres totaled 15,000 this year, with 13,000 acres harvested. Other spring wheat production, at 67.6 million bushels, is down 6 percent from last year's production. Yield, at 40 bushels per acre, is down 7 bushels from last year's state record. Producers harvested 1.69 million acres, up 10 percent from 2004. Planted acres, at 1.75 million, are up 9 percent from last year. Oat production in 2005, at 12.96 million bushels, is 7 percent below last year's production. Yield, at 72 bushels, is 10 bushels below last year's state record. Harvested acres, at 180,000, are up 6 percent from 2004. Planted acres, at 380,000, are unchanged from last year. Barley production totaled 2.30 million bushels, 27 percent below last year. Yield, at 49 bushels per acre, is down 14 bushels from last year's record high. Harvested acres, at 47,000, are down 6 percent from 2004. Planted acres, at 65,000, are down 7 percent from last year.
