Sioux Falls, SD Media contact: South Dakota Office, 605/323-6500 Email: nass-sd@nass.usda.gov SOYBEAN, SORGHUM, AND HAY STOCKS ARE UP FROM 2004 SIOUX FALLS, January 12, 2006 – South Dakota’s December 1, 2005, corn, all wheat, oat, and barley stocks are down from last year, according to the South Dakota office of the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Soybean, sorghum, and hay stocks are up from last year. Grain stocks include grain on farms, grain in mills and elevators, grain in government storage bins, and grain stored under the farmer-owned Grain Reserve Program in South Dakota on December 1, 2005. Corn stocks totaled 412.1 million bushels, down 6 percent from last year’s total of 437.1 million bushels. On-farm stocks accounted for 305.0 million bushels, down 5 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 107.1 million bushels, are down 9 percent from 2004. Soybean stocks totaled 103.1 million bushels, up 9 percent from last year. On-farm stocks totaled 62.0 million bushels, down 5 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 41.1 million bushels, are up 39 percent from last year. All wheat stocks totaled 71.2 million bushels, down 9 percent from last year. On-farm stocks decreased 8 percent from last year, to 48.0 million bushels. Off-farm stocks, at 23.2 million bushels, are down 12 percent from last year’s 26.3 million bushels. Oat stocks, at 10.3 million bushels, are down 10 percent from last year. On-farm stocks totaled 8.8 million bushels, down 9 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks totaled 1.5 million bushels, down 14 percent from 2004. Barley stocks on farms totaled 1.6 million bushels, down 11 percent from last year. Sorghum off-farm stocks, at 1.344 million bushels, are up 13 percent from last year’s 1.186 million bushels. Hay stocks, at 7.9 million tons, are up 14 percent from last year’s total of 6.9 million tons. Grain storage capacity in South Dakota totaled 770 million bushels on December 1, 2005, up 1 percent from last year. Total grain storage capacity comprises 580 million bushels on-farm and 190 million bushels off-farm. Off-farm storage capacity increased 4 percent from last year, while on-farm storage capacity remained unchanged. There were 255 facilities with off-farm storage capacity on December 1, 2005, unchanged from a year ago.
