Sioux Falls, SD Media contact: South Dakota Office, 605/323-6500 Email: nass-sd@nass.usda.gov CORN AND WHEAT STOCKS DOWN FROM A YEAR AGO SIOUX FALLS, March 31, 2006 – South Dakota’s March 1, 2006, corn, all wheat, oat, and barley stocks are down from last year, according to the South Dakota office of the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Soybean and grain sorghum stocks are up from last year. Total grain stocks include grain on farms, grain in mills and elevators, grain in government storage bins, and grain stored under the farmer-owned Grain Reserve Program. Corn stocks totaled 285.4 million bushels, down 9 percent from last year. On-farm stocks accounted for 205.0 million bushels, down 11 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 80.4 million bushels, are down 3 percent from 2005. Soybean stocks in South Dakota totaled 73.9 million bushels on March 1, up 25 percent from last year. On-farm stocks represented 48.0 million bushels, up 6.0 million bushels from last March. Off-farm stocks, at 25.9 million bushels, are up 53 percent from last year. All wheat stocks totaled 48.3 million bushels, down 17 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks totaled 26.0 million bushels, compared to 35.0 million bushels last year. Off-farm stocks, at 22.3 million bushels, are down 5 percent from last March. Oat stocks, at 6.9 million bushels, are down 18 percent from last year. On-farm stocks totaled 5.8 million bushels, down 16 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks totaled 1.1 million bushels, down 28 percent from 2005. Barley stocks on farms totaled 800,000 bushels, down 14 percent from the previous year. No off-farm estimates are published. Sorghum off-farm stocks are at 1.4 million bushels, up 8 percent from last year. No on-farm estimate is published.
