CATTLE ON FEED INVENTORY UP FROM JANUARY

SIOUX FALLS, February 18, 2005 -- South Dakota's 1,000+ capacity feedlots reported 205,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on February 1, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Office. The February 1 number is up 5,000 head from a year ago and up 13,000 head from January.

Placements
during January totaled 41,000 head, up 11,000 head from a year earlier but down 1,000 head from December 2004.

Marketings of fed cattle during January totaled 26,000 head, down 3,000 head from last year and down 8,000 head from December 2004.

Other disappearance during January totaled 2,000 head, unchanged from last month, but up 1,000 head from last year.

South Dakota's less than 1,000 head capacity feedlots reported 208,000 cattle on feed for January 1, 2005. This is up 33,000 head from 2004.

Number of feedlots: In 2004 South Dakota had a total of 3,253 feedlots feeding cattle for the slaughter market. Cattle marketed from these feedlots totaled 685,000 head in 2004, compared to 737,000 head in 2003.
