CATTLE ON FEED INVENTORY DOWN FROM MARCH


SIOUX FALLS, April 22, 2005 -- South Dakota's 1,000+ capacity feedlots reported 205,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on April 1, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. The April 1 number is unchanged from a year earlier but down 5,000 head from March.

Placements during March totaled 31,000 head, down 2,000 head from last year and down 1,000 head from February.

Marketings of fed cattle during March totaled 34,000 head, also down 2,000 head from last year but up 8,000 head from February.

Other disappearance during March totaled 2,000 head, unchanged from last year but up 1,000 from last month.

Steer and steer calves totaled 110,000 head, 53.6 percent of the total cattle on feed. Heifer and heifer calves totaled 83,000 head, 40.5 percent of the total cattle on feed. Bulls and cows totaled 12,000 head, 5.9 percent of the total cattle on feed.
