SD-CROP-LIVESTOCK South Dakota HOGS AND PIGS News Release June 24, 2005 HOG NUMBERS UP FROM LAST YEAR SIOUX FALLS, June 24, 2005 The state's June 1 inventory of all hogs and pigs was 1.40 million head, up 14 percent from June 2004 and up 3 percent from last quarter, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Office. Breeding stock totaled 145,000 head, unchanged from June 2004 and unchanged from last quarter. Market hogs totaled 1,255,000 head, 170,000 head above last year (up 16 percent) and 40,000 head above last quarter. The March through May pig crop was 688,000 head, 5 percent above last year. During the quarter 74,000 sows farrowed, up 6 percent from 2004. Pigs per litter averaged 9.3, down from 9.4 the previous year. Producers intend to farrow 73,000 sows during June through August, up 7 percent from actual farrowings one year ago. Intentions for September through November 2005 are for 74,000 farrowings, 4 percent above actual farrowings a year earlier.
