Cattle and Calves: South Dakota cash receipts from marketings of cattle and calves increased
from $1,508.8 million in 2003 to $1,639.1 million in 2004. Larger cash receipts were credited to
higher prices. The South Dakota annual average price per 100 pounds live weight for cattle in
2004 was $89.30, compared with $78.70 for 2003, while the calf price was $125.00 in 2004,
compared with $107.00 in 2003.
Hogs and Pigs: South Dakota cash receipts from hog and pig marketings in 2004 totaled $371.0
million, up 35 percent from the $274.7 million in 2003. Higher average prices, and a larger pig
crop increased cash receipts. The annual average price for all hogs increased from $38.60 in 2003
to $50.40 in 2004, while marketings increased from 3,313,500 head in 2003 to 3,429,500 head
in 2004.
Sheep and Lambs: South Dakota cash receipts from marketings of sheep and lambs in 2004
were $32.6 million, down 3 percent from $33.7 million in 2003. The annual average price for
sheep increased from $37.20 in 2003 to $40.90 in 2004, and lamb prices increased from $106.00
in 2003 to $115.00 in 2004. Sheep marketings decreased during 2004
