SOUTH DAKOTA MILK CASH RECEIPTS UP
SIOUX FALLS, April 29, 2005 _ Cash receipts from marketings of milk during 2004, at $220.4
million, was up 25 percent from the $176.7 million in 2003, according to USDA's South Dakota
Agricultural Statistics Office. Producer returns averaged $16.50 per cwt., up $3.10 per cwt. from
the previous year.
Total milk production in South Dakota increased 1 percent in 2004, to 1,347 million pounds. The
rate per cow, at 16,838 pounds, was up 4 percent from 2003. The 2004 average number of cows
on farms, at 80,000 head, was down 2,000 head from 2003.
