    UNITED STATES AND CANADIAN HOG INVENTORY UP SLIGHTLY FROM 2004


SIOUX FALLS, November 2, 2005 -- Inventory of all hogs and pigs for
September 2005 in the U.S. and Canada was 76.4 million head. This was up
1 percent from September 2003, and up slightly from 2004. The breeding
inventory, at 7.61 million head, was up less than one percent from a
year ago but down slightly from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at
68.8 million head, was up slightly from last year, and up 1 percent from
last quarter. The pig crop, at 34.3 million head, was up 1 percent from
2003, but virtually unchanged from 2004. Sows farrowed during this
period totaled 3.75 million head, down slightly from last year. 

U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1, 2005 was 61.5 million
head. This was up slightly from September 1, 2004, and up 1 percent from
June 1, 2005. Breeding inventory, at 5.97 million head, was up less than
1 percent from last year but down less than 1 percent from last quarter.
Market hog inventory, at 55.6 million head, was virtually unchanged from
last year but up 2 percent from last quarter. Sows farrowed during this
period totaled 2.90 million head, down slightly from last year.

Inventory of all hogs and pigs on October 1, 2005 in Canada was 14.9
million head, up 2 percent from last year, but down slightly from last
quarter. The breeding inventory, at 1.64 million head, was up 1 percent
from a year ago but virtually unchanged from last quarter. Market hog
inventory, at 13.3 million head, was up 2 percent from last year but
down less than one percent from last quarter. The pig crop, at 8.05
million head, was down slightly from 2004, but up 2 percent from 2003.
Sows farrowed during this period totaled 852,000 head, down 1 percent
from last year.
