Sioux Falls, SD Media contact: South Dakota Office, 605/323-6500 Email: nass-sd@nass.usda.gov CATTLE ON FEED INVENTORY UP FROM DECEMBER SIOUX FALLS, January 20, 2006 -- South Dakota’s 1,000+ capacity feedlots reported 205,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on January 1, according to the South Dakota Office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The January 1 number is up 13,000 head from a year ago and up 15,000 from December. Placements during December totaled 46,000 head, up 4,000 from a year earlier but down 17,000 from November. Marketings of fed cattle during December totaled 28,000 head, down 6,000 head from last year and down 5,000 from November. Other disappearance during December totaled 3,000 head, up 1,000 from last year and up 2,000 from last month. Steer and steer calves totaled 105,000 head, 51 percent of the total cattle on feed. Heifer and heifer calves totaled 73,000 head, 36 percent of the total cattle on feed. Bulls and cows totaled 27,000 head, accounting for 13 percent of the total cattle on feed.
