Sioux Falls, SD Media contact: South Dakota Office, 605/323-6500 Email: nass-sd@nass.usda.gov CATTLE ON FEED INVENTORY UP FROM JANUARY SIOUX FALLS, February 24, 2006 -- South Dakota’s 1,000+ capacity feedlots reported 210,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on February 1, according to the South Dakota Office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The February 1 number is up 5,000 head from a year ago and from January 2006. Placements during January totaled 38,000 head, down 3,000 head from a year earlier and down 8,000 head from December 2005. Marketings of fed cattle during January totaled 32,000 head, up 6,000 head from last year and up 4,000 head from December 2005. Other disappearance during January totaled 1,000 head, down 1,000 from last year and down 2,000 head from December. South Dakota’s less than 1,000 head capacity feedlots reported 195,000 cattle on feed for January 1, 2006. This is down 13,000 head from 2005. Number of feedlots: In 2005 South Dakota had a total of 3,164 feedlots feeding cattle for the slaughter market. This compares to 3,253 lots for 2004. Cattle marketed from these feedlots totaled 683,000 head in 2005, compared to 685,000 head in 2004.
