1996 AGRICULTURAL CHEMICAL USAGE

WINTER WHEAT

SOUTH DAKOTA: Nitrogen was applied to 78 percent of South Dakota's harvested winter wheat acres. Phosphate was applied to 65 percent. Winter wheat producers averaged 1.2 nitrogen applications applied at a rate of 40 pounds per acre, while phosphate was applied at a rate of 28 pounds per acre. Herbicide was applied to 65 percent of the acreage. The most popular herbicides in South Dakota were 2,4-D, and MCPA.
REGIONAL: Nitrogen was applied to 86 of the harvested acreage in the ten surveyed states while 51 percent received phosphate. Surveyed states average 1.4 nitrogen applications at an application rate of 45 pounds per acre. Herbicides were applied to 56 percent of the acreage. Leading herbicides in the ten states were 2,4-D, and Metsulfuron-methyl (Ally), treating 33 and 22 percent of the acreage respectively.

The agricultural chemical use estimates in this report are based on data compiled
from the Agricultural Resources Management Survey conducted during the fall of 1996
by USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. The 1996 tables refer to on-farm use
of fertilizers and pesticides on the winter wheat and corn crop for 1996.
CORN

SOUTH DAKOTA: Nitrogen was applied to 88 percent of South Dakota's 1996 corn acreage, the lowest among the 16 major corn states surveyed. Growers averaged 1.5 nitrogen applications at a rate of 60 pounds per acre. Phosphate and potash were applied to 77 and 39 percent of the acreage respectively. Ninety-one percent of the acreage received herbicide. Leading herbicides were Dicamba (Banvel) and Atrazine. Insecticides were applied to 25 percent of the acreage. Permethrin (Ambush, Pounce) and Lambdacyhalothrin (Karate) were the leading insecticides.
REGIONAL: Nitrogen was applied to 98 percent of the corn acreage in the 16 surveyed states. Growers averaged 1.8 applications, applying 75 pounds per treatment. Phosphate and potash were applied to 85 and 73 percent of the acreage respectively. Herbicides were applied to 97 percent of the acreage. Atrazine lead the way treating 71 percent of the acreage fol lowed by Metolachlor (Dual) and Dicamba (Banvel), treating 30 and 25 percent respectively. Thirty percent of the acreage received insectide, Chlorpyrifos (Lorsban, Dursban) being most popular.
