Texas Wheat Production Down 15 Percent from Last Year

According to an April 1 survey conducted by the USDA-NASS, Texas Field Office, Texas wheat producers expect to harvest 118.9 million bushels this year, down 15 percent from 2007, but 254 percent more than the 2006 crop.

Planted acreage for the 2008 crop is estimated at 6.0 million acres, down 3 percent from 2007 but 8 percent more than 2006.

Production on the Northern High Plains is expected to total 48.3 million bushels, down 41 percent from a year ago.  The Low Plains is expected to harvest 33.3 million bushels, an increase of 13 percent from 2007.  Producers on the Blacklands expect to harvest 16.9 million bushels, up 51 percent from last year.

On April 1, 19 percent of the winter wheat acreage was rated from good to excellent condition, compared to 67 percent good to excellent last year.

Texas is the only State that makes an April 1 winter wheat production forecast.  The first national wheat production forecast will be released on May 9, 2008.
