Texas Wheat Production Down 30 Percent from Last Year

According to a May 1 survey conducted by the USDA-NASS, Texas Field Office, Texas wheat producers expect to harvest 98.6 million bushels, down 30 percent from 2007, but up 193 percent from 2006. This forecast is down 17 percent from the Texas April forecast. Statewide yield is expected to average 29 bushels per acre, down 8 bushels from last year, but up 5 bushels from two years ago. Harvested acreage for grain, at 3.4 million acres, is down 11 percent from 2007. Production on the Northern High Plains is forecast at 29.3 million bushels, down 64 percent from last year. Winter wheat production on the Blacklands is forecast at 19.8 million bushels, up 77 percent from last year. The Low Plains’ production is estimated at 33.4 million bushels, up 13 percent from last year. United States winter wheat production for 2008 is forecast at 1.78 billion bushels, up 17 percent from 2007. Yield is expected to average 44.3 bushels per acre, 2.1 bushels more than a year ago. Acreage to be harvested for grain is expected to total 40.2 million acres, up 12 percent from last season.
