NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS SERVICE U.S. Department of Agriculture Washington Field Office P.O. Box 609, Olympia, WA 98507 NATIONAL HOP REPORT December 16, 2005 Contact: Kim Ritchie (360)902-1962 The Hop Growers of America (HGA) has contracted with our agency to provide a statistical profile of the Hop industry for 2005. This includes acreage, yield, production, stocks, and price information. We are pleased to present the final 2005 acreage, yield, and production by variety and by states. In the past, these data have been released to the public in mid-January. We have been requested by HGA to release the data earlier in order to allow producers an opportunity to analyze the data and develop marketing plans. Because of this request, the 2005 report is provided to you at this time. We have appreciated working with the Hop industry this year. If you have questions or comments regarding any part of this program, please call our office at (360)902-1940. 2005 HOP PRODUCTION Hops: Production for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2005 totaled 52.9 million pounds, down 4 percent from the 2004 crop of 55.2 million pounds, and 3 percent below the 2003 production of 54.6 million pounds. Idaho's 2005 production increased 4 percent. Production in Washington and Oregon dropped 5 percent and 6 percent, respectively. Acreage increased in all three states in 2005. Washington showed a 9 percent acreage increased. Idaho and Oregon were both up 1 percent. Yields declined in Washington to 1,871 pounds per acre, and in Oregon to 1,560 pounds per acre. Idaho yields averaged 1,640 pounds per acre, 52 pounds more than a year ago. Washington growers produced 75 percent of the U.S. hop crop for 2005. Zeus, Columbus/Tomahawk, Galena, and Willamette were the leading varieties in Washington, accounting for 70 percent of the State's hop crop. In Oregon, Willamette and Nugget were the major varieties, accounting for 74 percent of the hops harvested.
