Improvements in Conducting the
Census of Agriculture

  • The authority for defining a farm will be with the Secretary of Agriculture instead of the Secretary of Commerce.

  • NASS's 45 field offices serving the 50 states will provide strong support for the census for conducting and editing the census at the local level.

  • Integrating the expertise and resources:
  • takes advantage of NASS's recognized expertise in providing agricultural statistics and the large scale processing capabilities of the Census Bureau.
  • will result in earlier release of data.
  • ensures that the outlying area censuses of agriculture (Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands), and the follow-up programs such as the farm and ranch irrigation survey and the horticultural specialties census will continue to receive support.
  • will enhance the availability of electronic data (CD-ROM and Internet).
