2005 HOG INVENTORY A NEW STATE RECORD LOW
According to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, Hawaii Field Office, the total number of hogs and pigs on Hawaii farms on December 1, 2005 was 19,000 head, down 3,000 and 4,000 head from a year ago and two years earlier, respectively. The inventory breakdown pegged the breeding hog category at 5,000 head and the market hog herd at 14,000 head.
The 2005 pig crop totaled 28,000 pigs, down 3,000 from the previous two years. Farmers project farrowing 2,000 sows during the next 6-month period covering December 1, 2005 to May 31, 2006. This is unchanged from the previous 6 months (June 1, 2004 to November 30, 2004) and the same 6-month period a year earlier.

U.S. HOG INVENTORY UP SLIGHTLY
U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 2005, was 61.2 million head. This was up slightly from December 1, 2004.
- Breeding inventory, at 6.01 million head, was down 1 percent from December 1, 2004.
- Market hog inventory, at 55.2 million head, was up slightly from last year.
The September-November 2005 U.S. pig crop, at 26.1 million head, was unchanged from 2004 and up 2 percent from 2003.
- Sows farrowing during this period totaled 2.89 million head, up 1 percent from last year.
- The average pigs saved per litter was 9.03 for the September-November period,
compared to 8.96 pigs last year.
U.S. hog producers intend to have 2.88 million sows farrow during the December 2005-February 2006 quarter, 1 percent above the actual farrowings during the same period in both 2005 and 2004. Intended farrowings for March-May 2006, at 2.89 million sows, are up slightly from the same period in 2005 and up 1 percent from the same period in 2004.
