Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released April 18, 2005 Week Ending Date April 17, 2005 Issue IA-CW1605 Needed Rains Slowed Spring Planting Agricultural Summary: Rainfall last week hampered spring planting with some areas reporting in excess of 3 inches of rain for the week ending April 18. Corn planted showed only minimal gains over the previous week. There were 3.0 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to the previous week at 5.3 days. Topsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 13 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. The state's adequate and surplus ratings for top soil moisture showed gains over a week ago to 93 percent, while very short and short ratings declined to 7 percent of the state total. Field Crops Report: Oat seedings were 87 percent complete which was slightly ahead of last year's progress of 86 percent and above the 5-year average of 66 percent. Oat emergence was 31 percent, well above last year's 11 percent and the 5-year average of 15 percent. Corn planted was 10 percent behind last year's progress of 16 percent but slightly ahead of the 5-year average of 5 percent. Primary seedbed preparations were 65 percent complete, while fertilizer applications were 82 percent complete. Both ratings are nearly identical to a year ago. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report: Favorable weather conditions during calving made for a smooth calving season. Pasture and range conditions showed improvement from a week ago with 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 14 percent excellent. Iowa Weather Summary It was another very mild week last week with temperatures averaging 8.0 degrees above normal. Rain fell statewide on Monday (11th) and Tuesday (12th) with amounts averaging just over an inch. The greatest totals reported with the early week storms were 2.90 inches at Kanawha and 2.80 inches at Iowa Falls. Daytime highs were mostly in the 60's on Monday and in the 50's on Tuesday. Dry weather prevailed on Wednesday (13th) and Thursday (14th) with highs in the low to mid 60's. A few showers and thunderstorms moved into far northwest Iowa on Friday (15th) afternoon and overspread much of the northwest one-half of the state on Saturday (16th). High temperatures on Friday were mostly in the low 70's with low 60's northeast to mid 70's southwest on Saturday. Sunday (17th) was the warmest day in most areas with highs generally in the mid 70's northeast to low 80's southwest. A few isolated thunderstorms dampened portions of the north one-third of the state on Sunday. Temperature extremes for the week ranged from a Thursday (14th) morning low of 27 degrees at Atlantic to a Sunday (17th) afternoon high of 86 degrees at Sioux City. Soil temperatures as of Sunday (17th) were averaging a few degrees either side of 60 degrees statewide. Rainfall totals for the past week varied from 0.21 inches at Mount Ayr to 3.08 inches at Iowa Falls. The statewide average precipitation was 1.22 inches, well above the weekly normal of 0.79 inches.
