Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released April 25, 2005 Week Ending Date April 24, 2005 Issue IA-CW1705 Continued Rains Hamper Spring Fieldwork Spring rains hindered most field work activities for the week ending Sunday, April 24, 2005. Many counties received in excess of 2 inches of rainfall and reported frost as well. Some corn was planted, fertilizer spread and pre-emergence herbicides applied early in the week. One reporter commented, "The much needed rains are coming - right when you would rather be planting." There were 2.6 days suitable for fieldwork, slightly lower than the previous week of 3.0 days. Topsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 4 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 9 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 14 percent surplus. Soil moisture ratings in the surplus category showed increases from a week ago. Field Crops Report: Oat seedings were 92 percent complete, slightly behind last year's progress of 96 percent but above the 5-year average of 84 percent. Oat emergence was 60 percent complete, ahead of last year's 42 percent and the 5-year average of 38 percent. Corn planted was 17 percentage points behind last year's progress of 34 percent and 2 percent behind the 5-year average of 19 percent. Primary seedbed preparations were 69 percent complete, while fertilizer applications were 84 percent complete. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report: Calving was well under way with some reports of stresses in calves reported due to the continued wet, muddy conditions. There were some reports of scours. Pasture and range conditions improved from the previous week to 0 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 59 percent good, and 24 percent excellent. Several reporters commented on lush, green pastures benefitting from recent rains. Iowa Weather Summary Unseasonably warm weather with frequent showers and thunderstorms were the rule through mid-week across Iowa. Afternoon highs near 80 degrees were widespread on Monday (18th) with thunderstorms over the northwest one-half of the state. On Tuesday (19th) highs ranged from the low 70's northwest to low 80's southeast as showers and thunderstorms spread to the northwest two-thirds of Iowa. On Wednesday (20th) highs ranged from the low 60's northwest to low 80's southeast with rain falling across the southwest one-half of the state. Rain fell over all but extreme eastern Iowa on Thursday (21st) with highs only in the mid 50's north to low 60's south. On Friday (22nd) highs were in the low 50's northwest to low 60's southeast with rain falling over all but the extreme western portion of Iowa. The weekend brought dry and windy conditions along with the state's first widespread freeze in several weeks. Afternoon highs climbed only into the mid 40's northeast to mid 50's southwest on Saturday (23rd) and were near 60 statewide on Sunday (24th). A freeze was recorded over the northwest two-thirds of Iowa on Saturday morning with lows down to 28 degrees at Sibley. Nearly all of the state recorded a freeze on Sunday morning. At Spencer temperatures remained below freezing for nine hours, bottoming out at 25 degrees. Finally, portions of eastern Iowa recorded another freeze on Monday (25th) morning. The average date for the spring's last 32 degree temperature is about April 24 along a Shenandoah to Davenport line, however, in far southeast Iowa this weekend's freeze came as much as ten days later than usual.
