Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released May 2, 2005 Week Ending Date May 1, 2005 Issue IA-CW1805 Cold Slows Crop Development Cool weather slowed emergence of crops especially corn. Corn that has emerged is reported to be yellowed due to the week's cool and cloudy weather. Operators are anxiously awaiting warmer temperatures and sunny skies. There were 4.5 days suitable for fieldwork, up from just 2.6 days the previous week. Topsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 8 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Oat seedings were 99 percent complete, equal to last year's progress but ahead of the 5-year average of 95 percent. Oat emergence was 82 percent complete, ahead of last year's 73 percent and the 5-year average of 63 percent. Corn planted was 54 percent, 15 percentage points behind last year's progress of 69 percent but 4 percent ahead of the 5-year average of 50 percent. Corn emergence was at 5 percent. Soybean plantings are underway at 3 percent, behind both last year's 8 percent and the 5-year average of 6 percent. Primary seedbed preparations were 81 percent complete, while fertilizer applications were 91 percent complete. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report: Livestock are reported to be in good condition. Isolated reports of scours were received. A few reports of flu in hogs were also collected. Pasture and range conditions declined from the previous week to 0 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Cool temperatures have slowed pasture growth. Iowa Weather Summary It was an unseasonably cold week across Iowa with temperatures averaging 9.5 degrees below normal. Monday (25th) was the warmest day with daytime highs ranging from the upper 50's west to 70 degrees at Clinton and Lowden. High temperatures from Tuesday (26th) through Saturday (30th) were mostly in the 50's and were only in the 40's on Sunday (1st). Overnight lows dipped into the 20's somewhere in the state on every night of the reporting week. Sibley reported the lowest temperature with 23 degrees on Thursday (28th) morning. Light rain fell nearly statewide on Monday (25th) and Tuesday (26th) with a few small areas of showers on Wednesday (27th). An area of rain passed over extreme southern Iowa on Thursday (28th) morning. Mostly dry weather prevailed over the weekend. However, snow flurries were reported across the northeast one-half of the state on Sunday (1st) into Monday (2nd) morning with Cresco reporting a three-tenths of an inch accumulation. This was the first accumulating May snowfall in Iowa since May 1, 1997. Weekly precipitation totals varied from only traces at Underwood and Guthrie Center to 0.70 inches at Columbia (Marion Co.). The statewide average precipitation was 0.17 inches while normal for the week is 0.86 inches.
