Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released May 23, 2005 Week Ending Date May 22, 2005 Issue IA-CW2105 Weather Conditions Widely Varied Excessive rainfall in North Central Iowa limited fieldwork in that area to 1 day for the week ending May 22, 2005. Farmers in Southern areas of the State received less rainfall and consequently took advantage of having additional days to perform fieldwork. Northern counties expressed concern that due to too much rain, some soybean fields had not been planted and other corn and soybean fields need to be replanted. Pasture growth has failed to meet expectations due to the cool temperatures and lack of sunlight. There were 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 1.9 days from the previous week. Topsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 4 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 7 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 15 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Oat emergence was virtually complete. Oats Headed was rated at 1 percent complete. Corn planted was 98 percent, 1 percentage point behind last year's progress of 99 percent, but 3 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average of 95 percent. Corn emergence was at 76 percent, up from 41 percent a week ago, slightly above the 5-year average of 72 percent, but below last year's total of 88 percent. Soybean plantings progressed to 70 percent complete, well behind last year's rating of 85 percent, but near the 5-year average of 69 percent. Soybean emergence at 21 percent was up 17 percentage points from a week ago, but remained well below last year's rating of 52 percent and the 5-year average at 30 percent. Alfalfa hay first cutting was reported at 4 percent complete. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report: Livestock are reported to be in generally good condition. Some Northern counties reported stresses on livestock due to muddy lots and pastures. Pasture and range conditions deteriorated slightly from the previous week at 1 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 64 percent good, and 17 percent excellent. Iowa Weather Summary The past work week began with cool conditions on Monday (16th) with morning lows only in the 30's east and 40's west. Much warmer weather quickly returned on Tuesday (17th) with highs in the 80's in the far west and 70's elsewhere. On Saturday (21st) highs were in the mid 60's northeast to mid 80's far west while on Sunday (22nd) highs were in the mid 70's east to mid 80's west. Temperature extremes for the week ranged from a Monday (16th) morning low of 32 degrees at Waterloo to Thursday (19th) afternoon highs of 90 degrees at Bedford and Shenandoah. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged from 7.3 degrees above normal at Sioux City to 3.0 degrees below normal at Waterloo (statewide average 1.4 degrees above normal). Light rain fell across the north one-half of Iowa on Monday (16th) with a few thunderstorms scattered over the western half of the state on Tuesday (17th). Rain fell nearly statewide on Saturday (21st); however, only a few locations in the north central and the far south central portions of Iowa received more than one-half inch. Rainfall totals for the week varied from none in the extreme southwest corner at Sidney, Shenandoah and Clarinda to 1.97 inches at Forest City. The statewide average precipitation was 0.44 inches or a little less than one-half of the weekly normal of 0.97 inches.
