Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released May 31, 2005 Week Ending Date May 29, 2005 Issue IA-CW2205 Progress Continues Slowly Although many reports mentioned an overabundance of rain and moisture; a few areas have missed recent rains and will need moisture soon. Sun and warmth are coveted to improve emergence and growth. High winds prevented spraying in some areas while spotty rains slowed putting up the first cutting of alfalfa hay. There were 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork, up from 3.6 days the previous week. Topsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 10 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus across Iowa. Corn emergence was at 93 percent, slightly above the 5-year average of 87 percent, but remaining just below last year's total of 97 percent. Growers reported 4 percent of all corn acres in the state have been or will be replanted. Soybean plantings advanced to 87 percent complete, behind last year's rating of 91 percent, but ahead of the 5-year average of 84 percent. Soybean emergence, at 49 percent, remained well below last year's rating of 75 percent, but only slightly below the 5-year average at 52 percent. Replanting of soybeans was reported in some areas. Alfalfa hay first cutting was reported at 23 percent complete. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report: No serious problems reported for livestock.
