Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released June 13, 2005 Week Ending Date June 12, 2005 Issue IA-CW2405 Rain Hinders Fieldwork Agricultural Summary: Excessive rainfall hindered fieldwork throughout most of Iowa this past week. Wet, windy conditions have delayed spraying in many areas and fields have been described as "weedy." Pastures have benefitted from recent rains and grass is plentiful. As conditions permitted, farmers were busy replanting corn and soybeans, spraying fields and harvesting hay. There were 3.5 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 4.5 days the previous week and 3.5 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 4 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 20 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. The corn stand was rated at 93 percent of normal. Soybean emergence was at 90 percent, compared to 75 percent the previous week and 86 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. Growers reported 5 percent of all soybean acres in the state have been or will be replanted. The oat acreage headed was 53 percent, compared to 23 percent the previous week and 13 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average of 40 percent. Oat condition was rated 2 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 66 percent good, and 16 percent excellent. The first cutting of alfalfa was 72 percent complete, compared to 53 percent the previous week and 65 percent last year. Hay condition was 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 58 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Overall, livestock conditions were good, although reports of muddy feedlots were common. Pasture and range condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. Iowa Weather Summary The past work week began with dry and very warm conditions on Monday (6th) and Tuesday (7th) with highs mainly in the mid 80's to low 90's. Temperatures moderated slightly for the remainder of the week but remained a few degrees warmer than normal in most areas. Thunderstorms covered most of the state on Wednesday (8th) and Friday (10th). Thunderstorms affected much of western Iowa on Thursday (9th) while storms were widely scattered across the state over the weekend. Temperature extremes varied from a Tuesday (7th) afternoon high of 94 degrees at the Spencer Airport down to a Sunday (12th) morning low of 50 degrees at Sanborn. Temperatures for the week as a whole varied from 2.9 degrees above normal at Omaha-Council Bluffs to 7.6 degrees above normal at the Quad Cities. The statewide average temperature for the week was 5.3 degrees above normal. As has been the pattern for most of the spring, rainfall was most abundant across western Iowa and was well short of normal over much of the east. Weekly rainfall totals varied from 0.04 inches at Davenport to 3.91 inches at Rockwell City. The statewide average precipitation was 1.34 inches while normal for the week is 1.09 inches. Dry conditions in eastern Iowa are becoming an increasing concern. At Davenport rainfall has totaled only 4.44 inches since March 1 or 7.67 inches less than normal.
