Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released June 20, 2005 Week Ending Date June 19, 2005 Issue IA-CW2505 Crops Improve From Recent Conditions Warm, drier conditions improved crop conditions and sped development of corn and soybeans this past week. Several reporters commented on the rapid corn growth. Farmers were busy spraying corn and soybean fields, cultivating corn and putting up hay. There were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 3.5 days the previous week and 3.2 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 16 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 2 percent very short, 13 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. The corn stand was rated at 94 percent of normal, with an average height of 23 inches. Soybean emergence was at 99 percent, compared to 90 percent the previous weekand 94 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 55 percent good,and 16 percent excellent. Growers reported 5 percent of all soybean acres in the state have been or will be replanted. The oat acreage headed was 81 percent, compared to 53 percent the previous week and 16 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average of 65 percent. Oat condition was rated 3 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 19 percent excellent. The first cutting of alfalfa was 91 percent complete, compared to 72 percent the previous week and 81 percent last year. Hay condition was 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 14 percent excellent. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Overall, livestock conditions were good as feedlots were able to dry out this past week. Minor heat stress was noted as temperatures climbed. Pasture and range condition was rated 5 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 64 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Iowa Weather Summary The past work week began with warm and humid conditions on Monday (13th) with thunderstorms scattered across much of the state. Tuesday (14th) and Wednesday (15th) brought light rain to portions of northeast Iowa with highs into the 80's in the far west and in the 70's elsewhere. No rain fell anywhere in Iowa after Wednesday. Temperatures gradually warmed through the remainder of the week. Highs were in the mid 70's to mid 80's on Thursday (16th) and reached the low 90's in the extreme west by Sunday (19th) with 80's elsewhere. Relatively dry air was in place for much of the mid and late week, allowing temperatures to fall off into the 50's at night in most areas with a few 40's as well. Temperature extremes for the week ranged from lows of 45 degrees at Elkader on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, as well as at Cresco on Friday morning, to a high of 91 degrees at Sioux City on Sunday (19th). Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged from 4.4 degrees below normal at Ottumwa to 2.6 degrees above normal at Sioux City. The statewide averaged temperature was 1.0 degrees below normal for the week. Rainfall amounts were on the light side in nearly all areas. Conrad (Grundy Co.) reported the most rain with 1.11 inches while several western and southern Iowa locations such as Sioux City, Glenwood, Ottumwa and Burlington reported no rain during the week. The statewide average precipitation was 0.25 inches or less than one-fourth of the weekly average of 1.10 inches. This was Iowa's driest week in 8 weeks.
