Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released June 27, 2005 Week Ending Date June 26, 2005 Issue IA-CW2605 High Temperatures and Widely Varied Rainfall While most Northern counties received adequate to excessive amounts of rainfall this past week, Southern and East Central counties fell below normal. Rainfall varied, but temperatures were consistently above normal with highs into the 90's. Flooding, erosion and ponding occurred in Northern counties, while reporters in Southern counties observed heat stressed corn fields. As conditions permitted, farmers were busy spraying and cultivating fields and baling hay. There were 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.9 days the previous week and 4.3 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 7 percent very short, 26 percent short, 58 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 4 percent very short, 19 percent short, 68 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 20 percent excellent. The corn stand was rated at 94 percent of normal, the same as the previous week and 1 percentage point above the 5-year average. Average corn height was reported at 36 inches, up 13 inches from a week ago. Soybean emergence was virtually complete. Soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 18 percent excellent. The oat acreage headed was 95 percent, compared to 81 percent the previous week and 8 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average of 87 percent. Oat condition was rated 5 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 17 percent excellent. The first cutting of alfalfa was 99 percent complete, compared to 91 percent the previous week and 90 percent last year. The second cutting of alfalfa was 10 percent complete which was 4 percentage points above the previous year. Hay condition was 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Overall, livestock conditions were good although reduced gain from heat stress was reported. Pasture and range condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Conditions in the Northern counties were far more favorable than the dry, browning pastures reported in some Southern areas Iowa Weather Summary It was a hot week across Iowa with extremely variable rainfall. Daytime temperatures were in the 90's somewhere in Iowa on every day of the past week. Hottest days were Wednesday (22nd), Thursday (23rd) and Sunday (26th) when all but a few locations reached the 90's. Temperatures averaged 6.8 degrees above normal for the week. Temperature extremes ranged from a Monday (20th) morning low of 54 degrees at Decorah to a Thursday (23rd) afternoon high of 99 degrees at Sioux City. Thunderstorms were scattered across the northwest one-half of Iowa on Monday (20th) with high winds reported from 21 counties. Dry weather prevailed over nearly all of the state from Tuesday (21st) through Thursday (23rd). More widespread thunderstorm activity on Friday (24th) into Saturday (25th) morning brought torrential rains to parts of northwest Iowa from Le Mars to Fort Dodge. Thunderstorms were also widespread across much of northern and central Iowa on Saturday (25th) into Sunday (26th) morning. The weekend storms brought much needed rainfall to northeast Iowa and portions of east central Iowa but caused flooding along much of the corridor along US Highway 20 and Iowa Highway 3. Unfortunately southeast Iowa missed the rains entirely causing worsening drought conditions there. The statewide average rainfall was 1.62 inches for the week or about 50% above the weekly normal of 1.08 inches. Weekly rain totals varied from 8.50 inches at Fort Dodge to none at such locations as Shenandoah, Lamoni, Ottumwa, Burlington, Iowa City and Davenport.
