Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released July 5, 2005 Week Ending Date July 3, 2005 Issue IA-CW2705 Scattered Storms and Rapid Development Some areas of Iowa saw high winds and hail accompanying rain this week. However, parts of East Central Iowa remain parched with corn curling in the heat of the day. Reports of curling corn were also received from isolated areas in Southwestern Iowa. Corn is near tasseling in many areas of the State with conditions most advanced in the southern one-third of the Iowa. Early planted soybeans are closing the rows in 30 inch rows in some areas of the State. There were 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.7 days the previous week and 5.0 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 7 percent very short, 17 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 5 percent very short, 17 percent short, 68 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 24 percent excellent. Average corn height was reported at 51 inches, up 15 inches from a week ago. Soybean acreage blooming reached 21 percent, equivalent to the 5-year average. Soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 22 percent excellent. Oat acreage headed is nearly complete. The oat acreage turning color was 54 percent, compared to 20 percent the previous week and 22 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average of 32 percent. Oat condition was rated 4 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 58 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. The second cutting of alfalfa was 33 percent complete, one week ahead of the previous year. Hay condition was 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: The cooler, less humid conditions of the past week were favorable for Iowa's livestock. Pasture and range condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Iowa Weather Summary The past work week began with hot and humid conditions on Monday (27th) with afternoon temperatures in the 90's over all but far northwest Iowa. Daytime temperatures on Tuesday (28th) were in the 80's in most areas with readings climbing into the 90's across much of southern Iowa on Wednesday (29th). Temperatures were near seasonal norms on Thursday (30th) with highs in the 80's. July began on the cool side of normal with highs only in the 70's statewide on Friday (1st) and across the east again on Saturday (2nd). Temperatures were back up to normal on Sunday (3rd) with highs again in the 80's. Temperature extremes for the week ranged from Monday (27th) afternoon highs of 96 degrees at Iowa City Airport, Bedford and Shenandoah to a Saturday (2nd) morning low of 47 degrees at Cresco. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 1.1 degrees above normal. There were three periods with thunderstorm activity during the week. The first covered all of Iowa between Monday (27th) afternoon and Tuesday (28th) morning with heaviest rains in southwest, south central and central Iowa where Traer recorded 2.85 inches. The second rain episode missed a small portion of northwestern Iowa but dampened much of the state between Wednesday (29th) morning and Thursday (30th) morning. Rainfall totals with these mid-week storms were mostly less than an inch, however, damaging winds were reported from 38 counties on Wednesday night. The final period of storms began Sunday (3rd) morning and continued into the morning of the 4th. These weekend storms were more scattered in nature but did bring an area of more than an inch of rain in a narrow band along Interstate 80 in western and central Iowa. Weekly rainfall totals varied from only 0.05 inches at Emmetsburg to 3.59 inches at Parkersburg. The statewide average precipitation was 0.95 inches or just slightly less than the weekly normal of 1.03 inches.
