Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released July 11, 2005 Week Ending Date July 10, 2005 Issue IA-CW2805 Rain is Needed Most Iowa counties received only limited rainfall this past week and remained below expected levels. Consequently, many reporters increased their rating of topsoil and subsoil moisture in the short and very short categories from a week ago. The East Central and Southern counties of the State showed a minimum of 47 percent of their topsoil in the short to very short range. Some corn leaves are rolling due to heat and limited rainfall. Farmers were able to make good progress harvesting oats and hay. Spraying herbicides on soybean fields is winding down, while fungicide applications were about to begin in most areas. There were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 4.2 days the previous week and 3.6 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 12 percent very short, 27 percent short, 57 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 7 percent very short, 22 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 24 percent excellent. Average corn height was reported at 63 inches, up 12 inches from a week ago. Corn tasseled reached 19 percent, up 17 percentage points from a week ago and slightly ahead of the 5-year average of 16 percent. Corn silked was rated at 7 percent complete, slightly behind last year's progress of 8 percent and the 5-year average of 11 percent. Soybean acreage blooming reached 48 percent, slightly ahead of last year and the 5-year average. Soybeans setting pods was at 5 percent. Soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 19 percent excellent. The oat acreage turning color was 82 percent, compared to 54 percent the previous week and 21 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average of 61 percent. Oats harvested for grain reached 7 percent, slightly ahead of last year and the 5-year average. Oat condition was rated 5 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 16 percent excellent. The second cutting of alfalfa was 63 percent complete, up 30 percentage points from the previous week. Hay condition was 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Livestock were reported to be in good condition and calves appeared to be growing well. Pasture and range condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Lack of rainfall has lowered pasture condition from a week ago. Iowa Weather Summary The past work week began with temperatures averaging several degrees cooler than normal from Monday (4th) through Wednesday (6th). Daytime highs were only in the 70's and 80's on Monday and Tuesday and in the 80's Wednesday. Temperatures were back to seasonal normals on Thursday (7th) and Friday (8th) with highs in the 80's. Finally, heat returned for the weekend with highs in the upper 80's to lower 90's in most areas. Temperature extremes for the week ranged from a Wednesday (6th) morning low of 52 degrees at Mason City to a Saturday (9th) afternoon high of 94 degrees at Sioux City. The statewide average temperature for the week was 0.1 degrees below normal. Rainfall was on the light side with only a few locations receiving more than one inch during the week. Most of the week's rain came on the morning of the Fourth when thunderstorms dampened parts of central and southeast Iowa. The only other date with any significant area of rainfall came on Friday (8th) when thunderstorms were scattered across the northwest one-third of the state. There were many areas that received no rain during the week, including such locations as Decorah, Sioux City, Glenwood, Jefferson, and Osceola. Haven (Tama County) reported the most rain with 1.74 inches. The statewide average precipitation was 0.18 inches while normal for the week is 0.98 inches. A drier week has not been recorded since early March (17 weeks).
