Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released July 18, 2005 Week Ending Date July 17, 2005 Issue IA-CW2905 Hot and Mostly Dry The blast of hot air that Iowa received over the past week accelerated crop development. However, it also caused an overall deterioration in reported crop conditions. Measurable precipitation is high on nearly every farmer's wish list. This is a continued deterioration from levels seen the previous week. Iowa Weather Summary Hot and dry weather prevailed across Iowa for most of the past week. The work week began with temperatures averaging two degrees warmer than normal on Monday (11th) with readings warming about one degree per day through Sunday (17th). A cold front finally pushed through the state Sunday night and early Monday (18th) to bring a brief respite to the hot weather. Temperature extremes for the week ranged from morning lows of 56 degrees at Cresco on Tuesday (12th) and Sibley on Monday (18th) to a high of 99 degrees at Clinton Airport on Sunday (17th) afternoon. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 4.5 degrees above normal. The remnants of Hurricane Dennis barely brushed extreme southeast Iowa on Tuesday (12th) with De Witt reporting the most rain with only 0.23 inches. Showers developed nearly every afternoon somewhere in the state during the week but coverage was extremely small. The passage of the cold front on Sunday (17th) night finally brought widespread thunderstorm activity. Greatest rains fell in the southwest with 3.65 inches at Clarinda and 2.51 inches at Bedford. Unfortunately, these storms dissipated as they moved eastward and left the parched southeast one-third of Iowa completely dry. Some southeast Iowa locations, such as Maquoketa and Washington, have received no rain in two weeks. The statewide average precipitation was 0.65 inches while normal for the week is 0.95 inches.
