Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released July 25, 2005 Week Ending Date July 24, 2005 Issue IA-CW3005 Spotty Rains Fall Short of Crop Needs Some areas received enough rain last week to improve crop conditions, while others did not receive much, if any, causing crop deterioration in other areas. Cooler temperatures and precipitation are still needed in all areas. Spraying for insects in soybeans was reported to be light in areas where Bean Leaf Beetles and Aphids were present. Corn Rootworm pressure also was noted this week. There were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 6.8 days the previous week and 5.0 days last year at this time. Even though not all areas of the State received enough rain during the week, soil moisture levels improved from last week. Topsoil moisture rated 19 percent very short, 26 percent short, 54 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 15 percent very short, 31 percent short, 53 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. Corn tasseled reached 94 percent, up 33 percentage points from a week ago and ahead of last year's 84 percent and the average of 80 percent. Corn silked was rated at 80 percent complete, slightly ahead of last year's progress of 68 percent and the 5-year average of 64 percent. Corn in the dough stage was at 16 percent, well ahead of last year's 3 percent and the average of 2 percent. Soybean acreage blooming reached 89 percent, remaining ahead of last year and the 5-year average. Soybeans setting pods was at 49 percent, ahead of last year's 40 percent and the average of 34 percent. Soybean condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 18 percent excellent. Oats harvested for grain reached 71 percent, well of last year and the 5-year average. The second cutting of alfalfa was 94 percent complete. Hay condition was 5 percent very poor, 17 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 41 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: The heat and humidity were causing some stress in both cattle and hogs. Some operators were feeding hay due to poor pasture conditions in some areas. Pasture and range condition was rated 17 percent very poor, 30 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 21 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. This is a continued deterioration from levels seen the previous week. Iowa Weather Summary The past work week began with seasonal temperatures on Monday (18th) and Tuesday (19th) with well above normal temperatures for the remainder of the week. Highest temperatures were recorded over the weekend. Iowa's first official 100 degree readings since August 2003 were recorded at a few locations in southeast and extreme western Iowa on Saturday (23rd) with Keosauqua the hot spot at 103 degrees. The excessive heat was a little more widespread in south central and southeast Iowa on Sunday (24th) with Keosauqua again the hot spot at 104 degrees. This was Keosauqua's highest temperature since July 29, 1999 and the highest anywhere in Iowa since August 25, 2003. On the other extreme Cresco reported a Tuesday (19th) morning low of 53 degrees. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 5.5 degrees above normal. Thunderstorms dampened much of the northwest three-fourths of the state on Wednesday (20th) morning with nearly statewide coverage again on Thursday (21st) morning. The extreme northeast corner of the state received some locally heavy rain on Saturday (23rd) morning. Thunderstorms, some with severe winds, developed across the northern Iowa Sunday (24th) afternoon and continued into Monday (25th) morning. Rainfall totals for the week were extremely variable. Some of the already very dry southeast Iowa locations such as Centerville and Keokuk received no rain during the week. Meanwhile, locally heavy rains pounded portions of extreme northeast Iowa on the 21st, 23rd and 25th with Dorchester reporting 6.04 inches and Bluffton 6.69 inches for the week. The statewide average precipitation was 0.93 inches or just 0.01 inch less than normal for the week.
