Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released August 1, 2005 Week Ending Date July 31, 2005 Issue IA-CW3105 Cooler Temperatures and Welcomed Rainfall A cold front brought much needed rain to most Iowa counties along with a significant drop in temperature form Monday. For the first time this year temperatures reached 100 degrees, causing crop conditions to significantly decline in East Central Iowa. Spraying soybean fields for spider mites and baling straw was reported in some areas. There were 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.1 days the previous week and 5.5 days last year at this time. Most areas of the State received rain during the week, improving soil moisture levels from the previous week. Topsoil moisture rated 15 percent very short, 23 percent short, 59 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 18 percent very short, 24 percent short, 56 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition was rated nearly the same as a week ago at 3 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 20 percent excellent. Corn tasseled reached 99 percent, up 5 percentage points from a week ago and ahead of last year's 96 percent and the average of 95 percent. Corn silked was rated at 93 percent complete, ahead of last year's progress of 87 percent and the 5-year average of 86 percent. Corn in the milk stage was at 48 percent and corn in the dough stage reached 26 percent. Both categories are well ahead of normal. Soybean acreage blooming reached 95 percent, remaining ahead of last year and the 5-year average. Soybeans setting pods was at 67 percent, ahead of last year's 63 percent and the average of 58 percent. Soybean condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 19 percent excellent, which was a slight improvement from a week ago. Oats harvested for grain reached 89 percent, well ahead of last year and the 5-year average. The second cutting of alfalfa was 98 percent complete and the third cutting reached 11 percent. Hay condition was 3 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 43 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Livestock enjoyed a break from recent high temperatures and humidity, although some areas reported fly problems. Pasture and range condition a week ago showed 47 percent of the state's pasture in the very poor or poor range. This week showed a 14 percentage point drop in these two categories to 33 percent. Pasture condition was rated at 11 percent very poor, 22 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 28 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Iowa Weather Summary The past work week began with hot weather on Monday (25th) with daytime temperatures varying from the low 80's northwest to low 100's southeast. However, a strong cold front passed through Iowa Monday night bringing welcome relief from the heat. Daytime temperatures on Tuesday (26th) were only in the upper 60's north to low 80's southeast. Wednesday (27th) saw highs in the 70's statewide. Warmer weather slowly returned for the rest of the week. Temperatures climbed to the upper 70's east to mid 80's west on Thursday (28th) with 80's in most areas on Friday (29th). The weekend brought highs up to the low 90's in a few areas of southern and western Iowa. Temperature extremes for the week ranged from a Wednesday (27th) morning low of 45 degrees at Elkader to Monday (25th) afternoon highs of 101 degrees at Iowa City, Fairfield and Keosauqua. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 2.5 degrees below normal. The passage of the cold front early in the week brought rainfall to nearly all of Iowa on Monday (25th) and Tuesday (26th). Dry weather prevailed in most areas for the rest of the week. However, a few showers were scattered across the northwest one-third of the state on Friday (29th) with thunderstorms also dampening portions of central Iowa on Sunday (31st). Weekly precipitation amounts varied from only a trace at Onawa to 3.42 inches at Marshalltown. The statewide average precipitation was 1.39 inches while normal for the week is 0.94 inches.
