Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released August 8, 2005 Week Ending Date August 7, 2005 Issue IA-CW3205 Rainfall Shortages Remain a Concern The need for rain has been expressed across much of Iowa. Topsoil moisture was rated 98 percent very short to short in East Central Iowa and Southeastern counties rated 88 percent of topsoil moisture supplies in the short to very short categories. The State's range and pasture condition deteriorated as well. Corn and soybean conditions, although down slightly from a week ago, remained mostly in the good to excellent range. Spraying soybean fields for aphids, bean leaf beetles and spider mites was commonly reported. There were 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.0 days the previous week and 5.1 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 16 percent very short, 26 percent short, 57 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 16 percent very short, 27 percent short, 54 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition changed little at 2 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 19 percent excellent. Corn silked was rated at 99 percent complete, ahead of last year's progress of 96 percent and the 5-year average of 95 percent. Corn in the milk stage was at 76 percent, well ahead of last year's 62 percent and the 5-year average of 63 percent. Corn in the dough stage reached 44 percent, up 25 percentage points from a week ago and about one week ahead of normal. Soybean acreage blooming reached 99 percent, remaining ahead of last year and the 5-year average. Soybeans setting pods was at 83 percent, ahead of last year's 82 percent and the average of 76 percent. Soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 18 percent excellent, which was a slight decline from a week ago. Oats harvested for grain reached 98 percent, which is ahead of last year and the 5-year average. The second cutting of alfalfa was 99 percent complete and the third cutting reached 27 percent. Hay condition was 9 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 38 percent good, and 4 percent excellent. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Pastured animals are being feed supplemental grains as pasture conditions deteriorated in some areas. Pink-eye was reported to be showing up in cattle. Pasture and range condition was rated at 23 percent very poor, 17 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 22 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Iowa Weather Summary The past work week began with very warm weather on Monday (1st), Tuesday (2nd) and Wednesday (3rd) with daytime highs in the upper 80's north and the 90's south. Milder weather prevailed late in the week with highs in the upper 70's north to low 90's extreme southeast on Thursday (4th) with 80's in most areas on Friday (5th) and Saturday (6th). Hotter weather returned on Sunday (7th) with 90's widespread across southern Iowa. Temperature extremes for the week varied from afternoon highs of 99 degrees at the Iowa City and Clinton Airports on Wednesday (3rd) to morning lows of 47 degrees at Guthrie Center and Audubon on Saturday (6th). Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 1.1 degrees above normal. The only rainfall of consequence during the week fell across northern Iowa on Wednesday (3rd) night. Otherwise there were only some very isolated showers on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The weekend was completely dry. Rain totals for the week varied from none at many southern Iowa locations, such as Red Oak, Ottumwa and Davenport, to 1.61 inches at Charles City. The statewide average precipitation was 0.17 inches while normal for the week is 0.96 inches. This was Iowa's driest week in 21 weeks (mid-March).
