Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released August 15, 2005 Week Ending Date August 14, 2005 Issue IA-CW3305 Needed Rainfall Improved Crop Conditions Much needed rainfall was welcomed this past week, as all reporting areas of the State received some precipitation, while some areas received rains in excess of normal. Corn, soybean and pasture conditions all improved from a week ago, as 70 percent of the State's corn crop was rated as good to excellent and 71 percent of the soybeans rated good to excellent. Topsoil moisture showed improvement with 69 percent of Iowa's topsoil was rated adequate or surplus. However, several East Central and Southeastern Iowa Counties still remain well below normal precipitation levels, despite receiving rainfall this past week. As conditions permitted, farmers were busy spraying soybean fields for aphids and some areas reported corn fields being sprayed for corn bores. There were 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 6.0 days the previous week and 6.2 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 10 percent very short, 21 percent short, 65 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 16 percent very short, 26 percent short, 55 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition improved slightly with 3 percent rated very poor, 7 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 19 percent excellent. Corn in the milk stage was at 90 percent, up 14 percentage points from the previous week and 7 percentage points ahead of normal of 83 percent. Corn in the dough stage reached 63 percent, up 19 percentage points from a week ago and nearly one week ahead of normal. Soybeans setting pods was at 94 percent, ahead of last year's 91 percent and the average of 89 percent. Soybean condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 17 percent excellent, which was an improvement from a week ago. Oats harvested for grain reached 100 percent, which is slightly ahead of last year and the 5-year average. The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 52 percent, which is ahead of last year and the 5-year average. Hay condition was 11 percent very poor, 18 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 35 percent good, and 4 percent excellent, down slightly from a week ago. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Recent rains and cooler temperatures by week's end helped reduce livestock stress this past week. Pasture and range condition improved slightly from a week ago with 18 percent rated very poor, 22 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 27 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Iowa Weather Summary The past work week began with very warm and humid weather. Daytime highs were mostly in the 90's on Monday (8th) and Tuesday (9th) with Keosauqua reaching 101 degrees on Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures moderated slightly on Wednesday (10th) with highs in the 80's north and 90's south with 80's in most locations on Thursday (11th). Cooler and much drier air spread across the state over the weekend with highs mostly in the 70's on Friday (12th), Saturday (13th) and Sunday (14th). Overnight lows dipped as low as 48 degrees at Swea City on Sunday (14th) morning. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 0.6 degrees above normal. Dry weather prevailed in most areas on Monday (8th) with thunderstorms moving through the northeast half of Iowa on Tuesday (9th). Thunderstorms redeveloped late Wednesday (10th) and dampened all of the state by noon Thursday (11th). Additional rain fell across southern and eastern Iowa on Friday (12th) and Saturday (13th). Weekly rain totals varied from 0.49 inches at Alton to 5.76 inches at the ISU Agronomy Farm between Boone and Ames. The statewide average rainfall was 1.66 inches while normal for the week is 0.96 inches. This was Iowa's wettest week in 7 weeks while the drought-plagued east central portion of the state had their wettest week since early May.
