Ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released August 29, 2005 Week Ending Date August 28, 2005 Issue IA-CW3505 Lower Temperatures With Limited Precipitation Temperatures remained below normal this past week with precipitation also below expected levels in most areas. Reports of creeks drying up and brown pastures were received. Soybeans began turning yellow last week with some reports of leaves dropping. Over half the Iowa corn crop has reached the dent stage and 5 percent has been rated as mature. Farmers began chopping silage last week and seed corn harvest was about to begin. Several reports stated grain movement was active as farmers were preparing their bins for this season's harvest. The third cutting of alfalfa hay was reported to be winding down. There were 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork, the same as the previous week, and 1.1 additional days than this time a year ago. Topsoil moisture rating declined from a week ago with 14 percent rated very short, 27 percent short, 56 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 19 percent very short, 26 percent short, 52 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition remained about the same as the previous week with 3 percent rated very poor, 8 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. Corn in the dough stage reached 91 percent, up 15 percentage points from a week ago and 8 percentage points ahead of normal. Corn dented reached 58 percent, which is ahead of last year and the 5-year average. Corn mature reached 5 percent, which is slightly ahead of last year at 2 percent, but slightly behind normal at 7 percent. Soybeans setting pods was at 99 percent complete, equal to last year and the 5-year average. Soybean leaves turning color reached 12 percent, which is 4 percentage points ahead of last year and 2 percentage points ahead of normal. Soybeans dropping leaves, at 2 percent complete, is at a normal pace. Soybean condition was rated nearly the same as a week ago at 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 20 percent excellent. The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 83 percent, which is 12 percentage points ahead of last year and 16 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Hay condition was 9 percent very poor, 16 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 41percent good, and 5 percent excellent, a slight improvement from a week ago. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Pasture and range condition was rated at 11 percent very poor, 24 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 28 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Livestock were generally reported to be in good condition, largely because of the cooler temperatures. Iowa Weather Summary The past work week began with mild and dry weather. Daytime high temperatures were mostly in the 70's on Monday (22nd), Tuesday (23rd) and Wednesday (24th). Precipitation was limited to some light showers across the southern one-third of Iowa on Wednesday (24th) morning. Warmer weather arrived Thursday (25th) with highs in the 80's west and 70's east with light rain falling across portions of the southeast one-quarter of the state. High temperatures were mostly in the 80's on Friday (26th) and through the weekend. Showers and thunderstorms dampened most of Iowa on Friday (26th) but amounts were on the light side in most areas. A few isolated thunderstorms moved across small areas of southwest and south central Iowa late Saturday (27th) night and again on Sunday (28th) afternoon. Temperature extremes for the week ranged from lows of 45 degrees at Cresco and Elkader on Tuesday (23rd) morning and again at Cresco on Wednesday (24th) morning to a high of 94 degrees at Sioux City on Saturday (27th) afternoon. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 0.9 degrees below normal. Rainfall amounts varied from just a trace at Onawa to 1.97 inches at Beaconsfield (Ringgold County) and 2.00 inches at Emmetsburg. The statewide average precipitation was 0.33 inches or only about one-third of the weekly normal amount of 0.93 inches.
