ia-crop-weather Crop Weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released September 12, 2005 Week Ending Date September 11, 2005 Issue IA-CW3705 Harvest Underway Although some locally heavy rains arrived in the state, most areas saw only a brief pause in field activities. A strip of hail caused some damage in northwest Iowa. Corn silage harvest continued. Reports of corn harvested for grain were also received as were reports of early varieties of soybeans. Alfalfa hay harvest continued with some farmers working on a fourth cutting. There were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork, down from the previous week's 6.6 days and the previous year's 6.3 days. Topsoil moisture rated 23 percent very short, 30 percent short, 45 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture declined to 28 percent rated very short, 28 percent short, 42 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition changed only slightly from the previous week with 3 percent rated very poor, 9 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 43 percent good, and 24 percent excellent. Corn in the dough stage reached 98 percent, 1 percentage point higher than a week ago and 1 percentage point ahead of normal. Corn dented reached 88 percent, remaining ahead of last year and the 5-year average. Corn mature reached 34 percent, which is ahead of last year at 16 percent, but slightly behind normal at 39 percent. The percent moisture of field corn was 35 percent. Soybean leaves turning color reached 80 percent, which is 9 percentage points ahead of last year and 12 percentage points ahead of normal. Soybeans dropping leaves, at 37 percent complete, is ahead of a normal pace at 28 percent. Soybean condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 45 percent good, and 24 percent excellent. The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 95 percent, which is 5 percentage points ahead of last year and 6 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Hay condition was 11 percent very poor, 16 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 36 percent good, and 7 percent excellent. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Pasture and range condition was rated at 16 percent very poor, 28 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 23 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Livestock were generally reported to be in good condition. Iowa Weather Summary It was a very warm week across the Cyclone state. Temperatures were well above normal throughout the week with the exception of near normal readings in portions of northeast Iowa on Thursday (8th). Temperature extremes varied from a Thursday (8th) morning low of 49 degrees at Cresco to a Friday (9th) afternoon high of 97 degrees at Sioux City. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 9.7 degrees above normal. Showers and thunderstorms were scattered across the northwest one-half of Iowa from Monday (5th) afternoon to Tuesday (6th) morning with a few far northwest locations receiving over an inch of rain. Isolated thunderstorms were also scattered across the western one-half of the state on Wednesday (7th) with a few far northwest Iowa locations again receiving over an inch of rain. The week's most widespread rainfall came with thunderstorms on Thursday (8th) that dampened the northeast two-thirds of the state. These storms were accompanied by hail and high winds along a line from near Spencer southeastward to Keokuk. A total of 23 counties reported severe weather with the Everly area near Spencer reporting severe damage with high winds and hail up to baseball size. Weekly rainfall totals varied from none at a few southwest Iowa locations such as Shenandoah and Mount Ayr to 3.47 inches at Sanborn in O'Brien County. The statewide average precipitation was 0.83 inches or just slightly less than the weekly normal of 0.85 inches.
