ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released September 26, 2005 Week Ending Date September 25, 2005 Issue IA-CW3905 Harvest Continues Many areas of the state reported high temperatures last week into the nineties, which was 10 degrees or more above normal for many locations. Northern counties received excessive rainfall last week with a few areas reporting over 4 inches of rainfall. Corn continued to dry down due to the heat. Farmers continued to deliver last year's corn crop to elevators. Soybean, corn for grain, seed corn and alfalfa hay harvest was in full swing this past week. Some fall tillage and tile repairs were reported as well. There were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork, down from the previous week's 6.0 days. Topsoil moisture rated 24 percent very short, 23 percent short, 45 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture improved slightly with 28 percent rated very short, 25 percent short, 43 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn condition improved slightly from the previous week with 3 percent rated very poor, 7 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. Corn dented reached 99 percent, remaining ahead of last year and the 5-year average. Corn mature reached 81 percent, which is ahead of the 5-year average at 78 percent. Corn harvested reached 7 percent complete which is slightly ahead of last year, but 2 percentage points below the normal 9 percent complete. The percent moisture of field corn was 26 percent, down from last week's rating of 30 percent. Harvest corn percent moisture was at 22 percent, which is 3 percentage points lower than the previous week and 5 percentage points below last year. Corn lodging rated 67 percent none, 24 percent light, 7 percent moderate and 2 percent heavy. Corn ear droppage rated 74 percent none, 23 percent light and 3 percent moderate. Soybean leaves turning color reached 98 percent, which is 1 percentage point ahead of last year and 3 percentage points ahead of normal. Soybeans dropping leaves, at 90 percent complete, is ahead of the normal pace of 76 percent. Soybeans harvested reached 27 percent complete, which is ahead of last year and normal. Soybeans lodging rated 73 percent none, 23 percent light and 4 percent moderate. Soybeans shattering was rated at 75 percent none, 22 percent light and 3 percent moderate. Soybean condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 23 percent excellent. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Pasture and range condition was rated at 19 percent very poor, 28 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 21 percent good, and 1 percent excellent. Livestock were generally reported to be in good condition, with some reports of animals pasturing on already harvested fields. Iowa Weather Summary Mostly dry and unseasonably warm weather prevailed across Iowa from Monday (19th) through Thursday (22nd). The warmest day was Wednesday (21st) when afternoon highs varied from 85 degrees at Fairfield to 101 degrees at Glenwood. Glenwood's temperature was the highest recorded for so late in the year in Iowa since September 28, 1953 when the same location reached 103 degrees. A cold front slowly moved through the state on Thursday (22nd) and Friday (23rd) but only a small area in northwest Iowa saw temperatures slip below normal. Sioux City recorded the week's lowest temperature with a 39 degree minimum on Friday (23rd) morning. However, warmer air soon returned to southern Iowa where highs were back in the 80's over the weekend while rain held afternoon readings in the 60's across the north. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 7.7 degrees above normal. Only a few areas received precipitation during the work week with scattered showers across the far southern edge of Iowa on Monday (19th) and across the northern one-third of the state on Thursday (22nd) morning. However, showers and thunderstorms were widespread over the weekend, especially across northern Iowa where heavy rain fell. Weekly rain totals varied from none at Glenwood and Sidney to 4.70 inches at Ringsted in Emmet County. The statewide average precipitation was 1.45 inches or nearly double the weekly normal of 0.74 inches. This was Iowa's wettest week in six weeks.
