Iowa Weather Summary High pressure and sunny weather dominated Iowa during most of the week of September 27 to October 3, interrupted only by a cold front that brought light to moderate rain to much of the state on September 28. Rain was heavier in the central and southern portions of the state, with Donnellson reporting the largest one-day total of 0.78 inches the following morning. After the cold front passed, a few days of colder than normal weather ensued, with the lowest minimum temperature of 27§F reported in Atlantic on the morning of September 29. Freezing and below freezing temperatures were reported in at least one location in each of the six western and central crop districts in Iowa, and almost all of the climate stations in Iowa reached at least the mid-30s. This is approximately the normal time of year for first frost in northwestern Iowa, but the frosts in south-central and southwestern Iowa were 7-10 days earlier than normal. A strong southerly flow of air started replacing the cold air with above normal temperatures by September 30, and summer-like dew points also returned starting October 1. An upper level disturbance brought heavy rains to northern Missouri on the 1st and 2nd, with a few showers extending northward beyond the southern tier of Iowa. This additional precipitation did increase the total for Burlington Airport for the week to 0.94 inches, but only a small portion of the southeastern corner of the state received above normal rainfall for the week. On the far west-central side of Iowa, Sioux City only recorded 0.02 inches for the week, and most of the northern and western portions of the state received less than 50% of normal precipitation for the week. The state average precipitation this week was 0.40 inches, about 70% of the normal for the September 27 - October 3 period. Temperatures for the week were 2-4§F above normal in the northwestern part of Iowa, within a degree of normal over most of the state, and 1-3§F below normal in far southern Iowa. Very summer-like high temperatures in the low 90s were observed on the last day of the period in Onawa, Sioux City, and Glenwood.
