ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released October 11, 2005 Week Ending Date October 9, 2005 Issue IA-CW4105 Farmers Keep Busy Over one-fourth of Iowa's soybean crop was harvested again last week. Some farmers worked on fall tillage as well as manure application as they waited for the corn to dry down further in the fields. Aflatoxin concerns continue to be raised. Dry conditions in parts of the state contributed to field fire problems. There were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork, up from the previous week's 4.7 days. Topsoil moisture rated 20 percent very short, 23 percent short, 52 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 26 percent rated very short, 25 percent short, 45 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn harvested reached 20 percent complete which is ahead of last year, but 5 percentage points behind the normal 25 percent complete. The percent moisture of field corn was 20 percent, down from last week's rating of 24 percent. Harvest corn percent moisture was at 18 percent, which is 1 percentage point lower than the previous week and 2 percentage points below last year. Corn lodging rated 66 percent none, 26 percent light, 6 percent moderate and 2 percent heavy. Corn ear droppage rated 71 percent none, 24 percent light, 3 percent moderate, and 2 percent heavy. Soybeans harvested reached 78 percent complete, which is ahead of both last year and normal. Soybeans lodging rated 74 percent none, 23 percent light and 3 percent moderate. Soybeans shattering was rated at 66 percent none, 27 percent light, 6 percent moderate, and 1 percent heavy. Grain movement from farm to elevator was rated 19 percent none, 27 percent light, 33 percent moderate and 21 percent heavy. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Pasture and range condition was rated at 18 percent very poor, 25 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 24 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Livestock were generally reported to be in good condition. Light frost minimized the number of insects and pests around livestock. Grazing of stubble fields was reported. Iowa Weather Summary Very warm and humid air with daytime maximum temperatures in the 80s and even 90s dominated early in the week. More unusual, though, were minimum temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s at night over most of Iowa. Record warm minimum temperatures were set on both October 3 and 4 at Des Moines, Mason City, Waterloo, Ottumwa, and the Quad Cities. On October 4 the Quad Cities set records for the warmest maximum temperature (91ºF) and warmest minimum temperature (72ºF), with the latter also being the warmest minimum temperature ever recorded during the month of October in over 120 years of observations. Other warmest minimum temperatures on the 4th occurred in Lamoni and Dubuque, and unofficial records were set at more than 15 long term cooperative observer sites on both dates. A strong cold front moved into western Iowa late on the 4th, with severe thunderstorms causing some high wind and hail damage in west-central and northwestern portions of the state. Rain amounts of 1 to 3 inches occurred in the Sioux City area, with the largest total of 2.72 inches reported at Correctionville, due east of Sioux City. Holstein also exceeded 2 inches, recording 2.15 inches for the event, and Sioux City itself had 1.66 inches. However, the heaviest storms traveled northeastward into Minnesota, and most of the state received less than half an inch of rain as the front rapidly swept eastward. Temperatures plunged 25-30ºF after the front went through; Iowa average about 19ºF above normal during October 3-5, and about 9ºF below normal during October 6-9. The rest of the week was dry. The state precipitation average for the week was 0.40 inches, which was 69% of normal, and most of the state received less than this.
