ia-crop-weather State Iowa Crops & Weather Released October 17, 2005 For the week ending October 16, 2005 Fabulous Fall Weather Although soil moisture concerns remain for the future, Iowa's weather has been near ideal for natural drying which will save farmers huge drying costs. Manure application continues to be a common activity for those awaiting further dry down of corn. There were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork, up from the previous week's 5.5 days. Topsoil moisture rated 23 percent very short, 25 percent short, 48 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 27 percent rated very short, 28 percent short, 42 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Field Crops Report: Corn harvested reached 36 percent complete which is 4 days ahead of last year, but a day behind the normal pace. The percent moisture of field corn was 19 percent, down from last week's rating of 20 percent. Harvest corn percent moisture was at 17 percent, which is 1 percentage point lower than the previous week and 2 percentage points below last year. Corn lodging rated 65 percent none, 25 percent light, 8 percent moderate and 2 percent heavy. Corn ear droppage rated 73 percent none, 22 percent light, and 5 percent moderate. Soybeans harvested reached 90 percent complete, which is equivalent to last year but 4 days ahead of normal. Soybeans lodging rated 76 percent none, 19 percent light and 5 percent moderate. Soybeans shattering was rated at 65 percent none, 25 percent light, 9 percent moderate, and 1 percent heavy. Fall fertilizer application was 10 percent complete statewide. Grain movement from farm to elevator was rated 17 percent none, 24 percent light, 39 percent moderate and 20 percent heavy. Grain movement has become dependent on grain storage availability. Off-farm grain storage availability rated 54 percent short, 44 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus. On-farm grain storage availability rated 45 percent short, 51 percent adequate and 4 percent surplus. Both off- and on-farm grain storage availability are shorter than at this point in harvest of 2004. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report: Pasture and range condition was rated at 22 percent very poor, 26 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 22 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Cattle are moving to stubble fields in many areas. Some hay and/or silage is being fed, especially in south central and southeast Iowa. Iowa Weather Summary Dry air with warm days and cool nights were the rule for most of the past week across Iowa. In some areas daily temperatures ranges spanned more than forty degrees between the morning lows and afternoon highs. Monday (10th) and Tuesday (11th) averaged slightly cooler than normal while the remainder of the reporting week was warmer than normal. Friday (14th) was the warmest day with highs in the 80's over the southern two-thirds of the state. Temperature extremes for the week ranged from a Friday (14th) afternoon high of 86 degrees at Shenandoah and Red Oak to a Sunday (16th) morning low of 28 degrees at Elkader. Temperatures for the week as a whole averaged 2.8 degrees above normal. An area of light rain moved across Iowa from late Tuesday (11th) into Thursday (13th) morning with more light showers across the eastern one-half of the state Sunday (16th) night into Monday (17th) morning. Weekly rainfall totals varied from 0.68 inches at Sioux City to only a trace at Keokuk, Audubon and Cedar Rapids. The statewide average rainfall was 0.12 inches while normal for the week is 0.57 inches.
