Ia-press-releases Released December 28, 2004 December 1 Hogs and Pigs Report Iowa: On December 1, there were 16.1 million hogs and pigs on Iowa farms. The December 1 inventory was up 200,000 from a year ago, but down 200,000 from September 1, 2004. The September-November pig crop this year was 4.01 million head. A total of 450,000 sows farrowed with an average litter size of 8.9 pigs per sow. As of December 1, Iowa producers planned to farrow 440,000 head of sows and gilts in the December 2004-February 2005 quarter. Farrowing intentions for the March-May 2005 period were estimated at 440,000 as of December 1, 2004. If realized, this would be nearly 5 percent more sows than were farrowed during the same period in 2004.
