The September 1 inventory was up less than 1 percent from a year ago, but up nearly 2 percent from June 1, 2005. The June-August Iowa pig crop this year was 4.05 million head. A total of 450,000 sows farrowed with an average litter size of 9.0 pigs per sow. As of September 1, Iowa producers planned to farrow 460,000 head of sows and gilts in the September-November 2005 quarter. Farrowing intentions for the December-February 2006 period were estimated at 460,000 as of September 1, 2005. If realized, this would be 2 percent more sows than were farrowed during the same period in 2005.
