VEGETABLES

Commercial vegetable growers in Illinois harvested 300 acres of asparagus for fresh market and processing in 1996, which generated a total production of 3,000 cwt. Growers also harvested 7,600 acres of sweet corn and 1,200 acres of cabbage for the fresh market, which yielded production of 745,000 cwt., and 252,000 cwt., respectively. Illinois ranked ninth, nationally, in the production of sweet corn for the fresh market in 1996
