In Illinois, hogs account for approximately 11 percent of all cash receipts to farmers. In 1995, cash receipts from hogs amounted to $898.9 million compared to 942.6 million in 1994. Pork sales accounted for 47 percent of the livestock cash receipts during 1995.
In 1996, Illinois produced 1.95 billion pounds of pork, fourth in the United States. Pork production is centered primarily in the northwestern and western counties of the state, from Henry on the north to Pike on the south. The leading counties in hog inventory, based on December 1, 1996 figures, were Henry with 287,500, Knox with 177,000, Cass with 147,900, Pike with 142,400, and Edgar with 135,000. There were 8,800 hog farms in Illinois in 1996, eight percent fewer than in 1995.
Illinois hog producers had 4.40 million hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 1996, down eight percent from a year earlier. The inventory consisted of 520,000 head of breeding stock and 3,880,000 market hogs.
The average value per head for hogs and pigs on hand December 1, 1996 was $96.00, up from $70.00 a year earlier. The total value of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 1996 was $422.4 million, up 26 percent from the 1995 value of $336.0 million.
Farrowings for the period December 1995 through November 1996 totaled 900 thousand, down from 1.02 million a year earlier. The average number of pigs saved per litter was 8.37, compared to 7.98 the previous year.
The December 1995 through November 1996 pig crop was 7.5 million, down seven percent from a year earlier. Hog and pig marketings in 1996 totaled 8.32 million head, down seven percent from 1995.
