Commercial vegetable growers in Illinois harvested 200 acres of asparagus for fresh market and processing in 1997, which generated a total production of 2,000 cwt. Growers also harvested 7,500 acres of sweet corn and 1,200 acres of cabbage for the fresh market, which yielded production of 705,000 cwt., and 312,000 cwt., respectively. Illinois ranked tenth, nationally, in the production of sweet corn for the fresh market in 1997.
